Photographing a human well is very empowering. For a person to truly be *seen* in an image, means they have had to have been vulnerable in front of the camera and photographer. That requires trust, which in turn demands responsibility – a responsibility to give your subject a sacred place and an opportunity for them to be *real*. For those are the moments when we all reveal our inner beauty, and it can really shine.
That beauty will never be captured though, unless you are prepared for it. The moment and the light. You can read a zillion books about lighting and learn a lot, but I find I learn more with every single shoot I do. I practice, I experiment, and I used to get it really wrong a lot of the time. I found the more I experimented, the more I could predict the outcome. That is when you can call yourself a photographer.
